Christie, thanks for your comment. I'm not a tax professional, so I contacted my tax guy, Kevin Robinson. You can view his comments regarding the tax credit for Military Personnel above mine. It sounds like to me H&R Block is giving him bad info. Contact Kevin & I'm sure he could help you further.

First-Time Homebuyer Credit – For most people, this credit expired in 2010.
However, members of the uniformed armed services, foreign service or the intelligence community who were on extended duty outside the US for at least 90 days between December 31, 2008 and before May 1, 2010 who bought a home before May 1, 2011 may qualify for a tax credit up to $8,000 for new home buyers and/or $6,500 for existing home owners. Note: Taxpayers who received the $7,500 first time Homebuyer’s Credit on their 2008 tax returns will now have to pay the second installment or 1/15th of it back in 2011. This will show up as an additional $500 in tax due on their 2011 return.

[...] The interest rates for 30-year mortgages fell below 4% this week for the first time ever. For those in a position to purchase or refinance a home, it is a great time to be in the market. However, for most it’s still a challenge with the overall economy and tightened credit standards. Thankfully, the Winston-Salem real estate market is beginning to pick up slightly.
