If you’re a frequent reader of this blog, you know that I’m a big advocate for our city. For a city of this size, Winston-Salem has a lot to offer: Arts, racing, baseball, affordable housing, a revitalized downtown, the symphony, Old Salem, cheap living…I could go on and on. SmittyNotes.com has even tried to sum up our city on one page: Winston-Salem Fast Facts.

I’m really proud of the Winston-Salem area where I call home. We have cutting edge medical facilities, are on the fore front of bio-technology, been ranked #2 on the list of “Top Digital Cities“, been recognized as having a very low cost of living, and have a great arts community.
Now, Bloomberg Business Week has recognized our city as one of “The World’s Cheapest Cities for Expensive Living”.
Winston-Salem is a fun town with plenty to do. Downtown is in the middle of revitalization, and has really brought the city back to life. Since I’m a big baseball fan, one of my favorite things to do downtown is watch the Winston Salem Dash at the BB&T Ballpark. The Dash are a Minor League “High A” affiliate of the Chicago White Sox and play in the Carolina League.
2010 was the inaugural season for the Dash & ballpark. Previous to being the Dash, the team was known as the Winston-Salem Warthogs. You can read more about the history of the team here.
There was a lot of controversy (due to funding) before the new baseball stadium opened, but personally I believe it will be great for the city in the long term. The team had a lot of success in it’s first year making the playoffs, and drawing 312,313 total fans to the new park which led all Advanced-A teams in attendance. The ballpark was also voted “Best Ballpark” of 2010 by Ballparks.com .

We get hundreds of visitors to our sites each and every month. Many of them are people with kids in school moving into the area. And like all good parents, they want the best schools for their children. I have 4 daughters in all levels of school this year (Elementary, Middle, High & College!), so I certainly understand the concern for good public schools.

I had a little time earlier this week to walk around the Old Salem and downtown area and take some photos. All of these pics were taken with my HTC EVO Android phone. It has an 8 mega-pixel camera, so it takes decent pictures. I edited them slightly (color, brightness, contrast, etc), because they were a little dull on an overcast day.
