I’m really proud of the Winston-Salem area where I call home. We have cutting edge medical facilities, are on the fore front of bio-technology, been ranked #2 on the list of “Top Digital Cities“, been recognized as having a very low cost of living, and have a great arts community.
Now, Bloomberg Business Week has recognized our city as one of “The World’s Cheapest Cities for Expensive Living”.
Winston-Salem is a fun town with plenty to do. Downtown is in the middle of revitalization, and has really brought the city back to life. Since I’m a big baseball fan, one of my favorite things to do downtown is watch the Winston Salem Dash at the BB&T Ballpark. The Dash are a Minor League “High A” affiliate of the Chicago White Sox and play in the Carolina League.
2010 was the inaugural season for the Dash & ballpark. Previous to being the Dash, the team was known as the Winston-Salem Warthogs. You can read more about the history of the team here.
There was a lot of controversy (due to funding) before the new baseball stadium opened, but personally I believe it will be great for the city in the long term. The team had a lot of success in it’s first year making the playoffs, and drawing 312,313 total fans to the new park which led all Advanced-A teams in attendance. The ballpark was also voted “Best Ballpark” of 2010 by Ballparks.com .

The accolades are raining down on our community once again. 2010 has been a good year for Winston Salem in spite of the country’s and state’s economic woes. This year, Winston Salem has been recognized as having the lowest cost of living, being a top city for real estate investing, and being one of the most affordable housing college towns. Now, Partners for Livable Communities, a national non-profit, has put our cityon the “America’s Most Livable Communities” list. [Read more...]
I had a little time earlier this week to walk around the Old Salem and downtown area and take some photos. All of these pics were taken with my HTC EVO Android phone. It has an 8 mega-pixel camera, so it takes decent pictures. I edited them slightly (color, brightness, contrast, etc), because they were a little dull on an overcast day.
If you are visiting Winston Salem and looking for things to do, you must go to Old Salem and experience the history of this wonderful town. Old Salem is a historic district of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It features a living history museum that interprets the restored Moravian community. It’s worth spending at least a few hours at this local attraction.
The Salem Coffee Pot is a tin coffee pot located at the junction of South Main Street, Old Salem Road, and Brookstown Avenue. It was erected in 1858 by the Mickey brothers, Julius and Samuel, tinsmiths, in front of their shop at South Main and Belews Streets. Read more about it’s history below
When searching for a new home, buyers obviously have different search criteria that they are looking for. If a buyer has kids, then school zones are especially important in their home selection. Many agents don’t list the particular elementary, middle, and high schools for their MLS listings. Instead, they put “CALL SCHOOL BOARD.” My frustration with the lack of information led me to find a very helpful tool for finding the correct school for any address in the Winston Salem/Forsyth County school district. I commend the school system for making it available to the public. I’m sure the school admin office got tired of Realtors and home buyers calling them to see what school their kids would go to if they bought a certain home!

Braided Cord Coffee and Book recently opened in Clemmons. The partners are Andy and April Crissman, Davey and Jaymie Shealey, Donnie Lambert, and Brian Ritter. They all have a heart for hospitality, and I guarantee if you go in, you’re going to feel welcome!
They started the coffee and book shop to help support their vision of taking Jesus to the world, and they plan to use profits to help support people who go on missions trips. Go visit them and get a great cup of coffee…and don’t forget April’s homemade Apple Bran Muffins. They are awesome!
My dogs, like most, love going on walks. If they hear the leash or collars rattle, then it’s on! They are barking and jumping around like they are on a pogo stick. Dogs are allowed at all Winston Salem parks if they are on a leash. Washington Park, however, has a great dog park and you are allowed to “unleash” your pooch.
